Our Story
Skip Johnson
Gate City Woodworks was founded in 2017 by Skip Johnson. Skip’s love of building and repairing things began as a child when he would often help his dad with various projects around the house. His love deepened in high school as a scenic theatre carpenter. The theatre aspect was fine, but what he really loved was the diversity of scenery he was asked to build and install. He continued to work in professional theaters up and down the east coast for 8 years. During this time he learned new skills and honed old ones. Skip left the theatre industry to try his hand at teaching and, while he found it rewarding, he missed working with his hands. Skip spent his summer breaks in his wood shop working on custom furniture and remodels for acquaintances. In doing so, he rediscovered what he missed and decided to leave teaching to pursue his passion full time.
As business picked up, Skip realized he needed an extra set of hands. Skip called upon his brother, Gray Johnson, in April 2018. Gray had recently graduated from The Rhode Island School of Design where he had pursued his love of making by studying sculpture. He had lived in various cities up and down the east coast, but had not settled anywhere. So, Gray heeded Skip’s call and came to Greensboro. Gray assisted using his skill and knowledge from both school and summer carpentry work. Enjoying the work and the area, he set down roots and officially joined Gate City Woodworks.
